We are now inviting submissions of titles and abstracts of 150–200 words for the

11th HUSSE Conference

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of HUSSE

The final deadline for the submission of titles and abstracts as well as for paying the registration fee is 31st December, 2012.

We invite titles and abstracts for 20-minute papers in all fields of English studies from academics and PhD students. We are also planning to publish an edited collection of papers presented at the conference in an electronic format, to make it available on the HUSSE website ( and in the Hungarian Electronic Library as well (

In addition to 20-minute presentations there will be two special sections devoted to topics of general interest:

  1. A sequence of sessions will focus on the ongoing project “The Hungarian History of English Literature”: confirmed speakers include Prof. Tamás Bényei, Prof. Péter Dávidházi and Prof. Géza Kállay. All those interested are invited to contribute papers on theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of this enterprise. These sessions will be in Hungarian. Participation does not exclude the possibility of presenting English language papers in other sections. More information below.
  2. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of HUSSE, we organise panel discussions focusing on current challenges our profession encounters. Possible topics include:
    • humanities in the digital age
    • disciplinary and institutional changes in present-day English Studies
    • the future of modern philology

    We invite 5 to 10-minute presentations suitable for launching debates in these and other related topics.

Detailed information on travel and accommodation will be provided in the next circular and on the conference website. We will not be able to offer guest rooms or dormitory places on campus, but we will provide a list of hotels within easy reach of the venue by public transportation.

Information about payment:

The deadline for early bird registration (with title and abstract) is extended to 15 November, 2012. We can only accept late payments until 31 December, 2012 – after that, your registration will expire! All payments should be sent to the bank account of HUSSE.

Non-HUSSE members: 8000 HUF
PhD students: 4000 HUF

Conference dinner (optional, first-come-first served basis):

3000 HUF (payable only in advance, together with registration fees)

The registration fee will cover the welcome reception, refreshments during coffee breaks, and the conference folder. The cost of the conference dinner, however, is not included – if you wish to join this event (25th January, Friday evening), make sure you indicate it on your registration form and pay for it together with your registration fee, so that we can make the necessary arrangements in time.

Registration payments can only be made by bank transfer – if you need a legal (pro forma) invoice in advance, could you please return the registration form in time, allowing us sufficient time for posting the invoice before the deadline of 30 November 2012.

The Organisers

A HUSSE 11 Konferencia egyik szekcióját az Angol irodalom magyar története című kiadványnak szenteljük, amely terveink szerint sokak közös munkája lenne. A szekciót Bényei Tamás és Kállay Géza vezetik. Az érdeklődők a következő témakörökbenjelentkezhetnek 20 perces előadásokkal, illetve beszámolókkal: az irodalomtörténet-írás elméleti és gyakorlati kérdései (milyen legyen egy ‘ideális’ irodalomtörténet?); már létező irodalomtörténetek (bármely nyelvű) elemzése, kritikája; javaslatok a korszakolásra, tagolásra; javaslatok olyan témákra, amelyeknek az előadó szerint mindenképpen helyet kellene kapniuk a műben.Vitaindító előadást tart a szekció elején Kállay Géza, összefoglaló-értékelő előadást tart a szekció végén Bényei Tamás. A szekció munkanyelve a magyar, s afféle “ráadás”-szekcióként fog működni, azaz aki ide jelentkezik, még tarthat más szekcióban is előadást. A szekció hossza és pontos “műfaja” (előadások+diszkussziók; workshop; kerekasztal-beszélgetés, esetleg ezek “keveréke”) természetesen a jelentkezők számától függ.
